Welcome to the Art Village of Balestrand
Balestrand kommune is one of the smallest municipalities in the region of Sogn, with appr. 1500 inhabitants. With its snow-covered mountains and open fjord landscape, Balestrand has been a favorite holiday place for travellers through centuries, and Kviknes Hotel with its famous 1913 swiss style facade is a well-known landmark in the region. With the tradiotion of art and craftmanship, we are proud to call ourselves an Art village today!Besides tourism, farming is one of the traditional sources of income. Other industries include a.o. made-to-order kitchen interiors, local apple juice and Nesseplast, which produces industrial plastic. Balestrand kommune employ appr. 200 persons per year, of which the largest number is in health care. The municipality have three schools for age 6 - 12 and one school for the age group 12 - 15 years. There is also one private school age 16 - 19, where students from the whole country attend. The nearest centre is Sogndal, appr. 1 hour away. This is also where you find the regional college Høgskulen i Sogn og Fjordane.
Sogndal also has an airport, as has Førde, appr. 1,5 hrs away. There is an express boat to Bergen (once a day in winter time, twice daily between 1st May and 30th of September). There are express buses to Oslo and Bergen three times a day. Press here for schedules
